Within Kobe, the Shioya area of Tarumi Ward is especially close to the mountains and ocean. The houses that have been built on these steep slopes have wonderful views of the sea. Because of its scenic beauty, many foreign merchants lived here during the Meiji Era (1868-1912). There are also many small houses due to the numerous narrow roads that are difficult for cars to enter, and the small shopping streets of the olden days continue to exist. Nowadays, more and more creative people are moving to Shioya.
